ASP
Application Service Provider – An organization that hosts software applications and related services on their own servers, that their clients would have access by the Internet or private connection.
B2B
Business-to-Business – A business exchanging information, products or services with another business.
B2C
Business-to-Consumer – A business exchanging information, products or services with a consumer – as opposed to another business (B2B).
Bounce Rate
The total number of emails that were returned as undeliverable divided by the total number of emails sent (multiply this number by 100 to express the result as a percentage).
Bounced email
A bounced email is an email that is returned to the server that sent it. Emails can also bounce if the size of the attached file exceeds a set limit by your ISP. "Hard" bounces are caused by invalid email addresses, whereas "soft" bounces are due to temporary conditions.
Calls to Action
Words included in images or text that encourage the prospect to take a specific action.
Campaign
A coordinated set of individual email marketing messages delivered at intervals and with an overall objective in mind. A campaign allows each new message to build on previous success.
Blacklists
Blacklists are made up of lists of IP addresses belonging to organizations that have been identified as senders of SPAM (unsolicited commercial email). Blacklists are often used by ISPs and corporations as part of the filtering process that determines which IP addresses they prohibit from sending mail to their members.
Blocking
Blocking is when emails are prevented from reaching their intended destination, typically due to action taken on the part of the Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Click-Through
When a customer takes an action by clicking on a link, an indicator of response to a given email message, as measured by the percentage of recipients that click on a link enclosed in the email.
Click-Through Rate
To determine the click-through rate, divide the number of responses by the number of emails sent.
Click-to-Open Rate (CTOR)
The click-to-open rate expresses the measure of click-through rates as a percentage of messages opened, instead of messages delivered. To determine the click-to-open rate, divide the number of unique click-through by the number of unique emails opened.
Confirmed Opt In
A Confirmed Opt In (also referred to as Double Opt In) is a two-step process that allows a user to join your mailing list. The user must initially sign up, and then respond to a follow-up email prior to receiving any further email.

Mailing List
Group of email addresses (with or without additional information such as the subscribers' names) to which specific messages are sent.
Opt In
The action a person takes when he or she actively and explicitly requests, by email or other means, to receive email communications.
Domain name
A name that identifies one or more IP addresses and distinguishes them from other systems on the network. There are at least two parts to Domain names that are separated by dots. The part on the left is the second-level domain (more specific), while the part on the right is the top-level domain (more general).
Opt Out
The action a person takes when he or she chooses not to receive email communications. It requires a Web-based mechanism by which people can ask to be removed reliably from an email list. This request must be honored within ten days.
Receiver
The entity that handles the receipt of the email and delivery to the end recipient, usually identified by the domain at the end of the email address of the recipient in the ‘To’ line.
Recipient
The end user who requested the email from the sender, usually identified by the email address in the ‘To’ line.
Personalization
The practice of building an email such that the recipient feels it is a more personal experience. Personalization can include a number of things, such as mail merging a name into the body copy, referring to previous purchases, or more dynamic content insertions based on demographic fields.
Spam
Unwanted email usually sent without the recipient's permission.
Spam Complaint
The receipt of a complaint from a recipient who has identified the message as spam.
Unique Click
A unique click is a single click by a single user. When unique clicks are measured, it is an aggregate number of how many times that URL was clicked by individual users.
Unsubscribe Request
The action a person takes when he or she chooses not to receive email communications. It requires a Web-based mechanism by which people can ask to be removed reliably from an email list. This request must be honored within ten days.
Download
To transfer a copy of a file from an Internet server to one's own computer.
Email Marketing Campaign
An organized and designed email-marketing message, which can be delivered at intervals or only once.
Multi-threading
A process that allows a multitasking operating system to multitask subportions (threads) of an application smoothly.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol – The standard email protocol on the Internet. SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent; it is the set rules between sending and receiving email programs.
Spam Filter
Spam is a term used to mean unsolicited, bulk e-mail that clogs your e-mail inbox and is often annoying. A spam filter is a program that will actually capture e-mails that look like spam before they are sent to your in-box.

Customer relationship management (CRM) is a broad term that refers to concepts businesses use to maintain and improve relationships with customers. A form that website owners can add to their site to collect newsletter signups from visitors.
Permission-based email
The practice of only sending email messages to those recipients who have agreed (or asked) to receive email messages.
ROI (Return on Investment)
A measure of the profit realized and/or costs saved at a company, or as the result of a specific project within the company. ROI measures how effectively the firm uses its capital and resources to generate profit; the higher the ROI, the better. An ROI calculation is sometimes used along with other approaches to develop a business case for a given proposal.
Viral Marketing
Elements and functions included in a communication that encourages and allows recipients to pass the offer along to others, thereby leveraging the marketing effort.
White lists
White lists are lists of commercial mailers (including ESP) who have been approved to send mail through the ISP. The ISP (internet service provider) requires a list of IP (internet protocol) addresses that email will be sent from, and in some cases a test period where the commercial mailer will be approved or rejected.

Short Message Service (SMS) is a service that permits the sending of short text messages between mobile phones, other handheld devices, desktop computers and even landline
Text Message
Currently standard SMS protocols limit the size of a text message to 160 characters.
SMS Marketing
A form of Mobile marketing that utilizes SMS to deliver its promotion.
